Kelly Joe Phelps continues to expand the parameters of modern blues through his strong commitment to literary songs and his expressive yet simple guitar stylings. While casual listeners may call Phelps a bluesman, his playing is so fluid, dexterous, and improvised he obviously has the soul of a jazz musician. Phelps was raised in a music loving household in Sumner, WA, near Tacoma. The son of Seventh Day Adventist parents, Phelps' father was an air conditioning and refrigeration specialist and his mother worked as a housewife and Tupperware sales person. "They didn't have a large record collection," he recalled in a 2000 interview, "but the influence from them musically was the fact that they played music, at home, almost daily." Phelps' parents didn't play music for religious reasons, but merely for emotional ones. Phelps' father played guitar, fiddle, piano, and harmonica while his mother played guitar and some banjo. His father liked country & western music, but also developed an ear for blues, as he brought home albums by Meade "Lux" Lewis, Pete Johnson, and other boogie-woogie piano players. "I can remember being five or six and hearing him beat out these boogie-woogie tunes on piano," Phelps recalled.

“Jazz was the first music,” Kelly Joe Phelps once told an interviewer, “that I was aware of that was improvised. That alone was enough to make me do literally nothing else for nearly 10 years.” Certainly, Phelps’ recorded output hasn’t reached the soaring heights of exploration that his early idols Miles Davis and John Coltrane once so constantly strove for and oftentimes reached, because after his jazz immersion he hit a bump in the road: delta blues. Based in Portland, Ore., the finger-picking guitarist now journeys along a unique hybrid trail of folk music, where free improvisation points the way as much as strict technique. And others have noticed. Phelps has guested on albums by Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, Jay Farrar and Tim O’Brien, among others, and just released his eighth album, Western Bell, last year. He plays an in-store concert with country/folk singer Corrine West on Friday, Feb. 26, at Schoenberg Guitars. 106 Main St., Tiburon. 8pm. $20–$25. 415.789.0846.

NW : Alors Phelps, je pense qu’il y a quelque chose de très intéressant chez lui, c’est qu’il vient du jazz, et même du free jazz, et tout d’un coup il se met à s’intéresser au blues. Et à mon avis cela en dit long à propos du fait que l’on a toujours tendance à penser que le blues, parce qu’il repose sur une économie de moyen absolu, c’est une musique simple et facile. Et typiquement par la démarche d’un type comme Phelps, on a la confirmation du contraire. Il vient du jazz et s’intéresse à quelque chose que l’on met parfois en dessous à tort. Il aborde ça d’une manière que je trouve très intéressante.
Marc : Est-ce que ce serait : « Qui peut le plus, peut le moins », mais ce n’est pas forcément donné à tout le monde, la preuve ???

There are few artists who offer the raw sincerity and accomplished musical acumen that guitarist, singer, and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps does. From his first offering, Lead Me On on the Burnside label, through his subsequent studio outings for Rykodisc, Phelps has done something remarkable: forged himself a solid identifying mark as a folk and blues musician of distinction in fields owing so much to the past that latter-day performers are usually crushed under the weight of them. Tap the Red Cane Whirlwind is a collection of solo live performances recorded n California in 2004. Lee Townsend, who has long been affiliated with him, produced the set. It opens with a nine-and-a-half-minute version of Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues." Phelps snakily moves the tune through various modes and modulations, delving deep into Delta blues tonalities and backside melodies that open up spaces inside it. His voice, smoky and sweetly raspy, is never harsh, though it often sounds like it is inhabited by ghosts. It's a stunner. The other cover here is a smoking version of the late Rev. Gary Davis' "I Am the Light of the World." Dignified, soulful, and spot-on musically, Phelps is a dynamite guitarist who adds, subtracts, and morphs figures onto the original fingerstyle lines, and uses his voice to offer evidence of the timelessness of the lyric. And as moving and virtuosic as these two performances are, it's his own songs that offer the true prize of this collection. There's "Jericho," with its spooky droning bassline just under some slippery, winding fingerstyle playing, all of it supporting a vocal that comes from some lost world, just beyond the pale, to impart a tale from antiquity that weighs heavily on the forbidding present juncture. The stinging folk-blues of "Gold Tooth" showcases Phelps' ability to make the strings literally dance as his singing tugs at the ends of lines while driving others deeper into the spectral groove. The tenderness inherent in "Waiting for Marty" is elegiac, full of sepia tones and the notion of bittersweet memory. Here is the place where longing, regret for a life squandered, and the acceptance of things as they are -- even as they drift away into the ether and invisible history -- makes for a song that is literally unlike any other. Simply stated, if there is one recording that captures the sum of the magic, power, and poetry that is Kelly Joe Phelps, this one's it

The “an Acoustic Café evening,” the prestigious touring series returns for a third consecutive year hosted by Austin-based singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Carrie Rodriguez. Joining Carrie each night are “The Phantom Monk Of Folk- Blues” Kelly Joe Phelps, fellow tour veteran, Northampton lit/pop darling and multi-instrumentalist Erin McKeown (through January 30th) and poet-songwriter Pieta Brown (January 31st onward).

Host Carrie Rodriguez’s most recent releases, Love & Circumstance (2010) and We Still Love Our Country w/Ben Kyle (2011) are primarily cover collections that highlight her vocal and interpretive skills. But Rodriguez has become more well known as a burgeoning singer-songwriter in her own right behind the strength of her first two solo releases, She Ain’t Me (CRS - 2008), and Seven Angel’s On A Bicycle (Trainwreck - 2007) & a world-class instrumentalist based on her recorded work and her touring with Alejandro Escovedo (2008-2010) and as part of the “an Acoustic Café evening” tours (2010 & 2011).

A newcomer to the tour, Kelly Joe Phelps is no stranger to the road. He has been described as, “The Phantom Monk Of Folk- Blues,” and rightly so. Over the past 17 years of recording and touring, Phelps has been talked about as much for his passionate, spirit-driven, lone musical ways as for the inventiveness of his playing and singing. He uses the blues as a pallet, his songs as literally a canvas – each performance is an original improvisation. Erin McKeown has been touring nationally for over a decade and has sold well over 100,000 records. Erin has very strong non-com AAA following and is a press darling - she has countless musician fans too - including Dave Mathews, Mike Doughty, Ani Difranco, Andrew Bird, and Josh Ritter. In addition to her active tour schedule and side projects, she'll have a new record of original songs dropping in 2012. She just released an anti-holiday collection of songs entitled, f*ck that.

Pieta Brown is a striking poet-songwriter with a haunting voice and an unmistakable style. Her beautiful new record on Red House entitled, Mercury, is currently number 1 on the folk radio chart. Her unique blend of alt-country, folk, blues and indie-rock speaks to music fans around the world and has garnered rave reviews from the likes of the BBC and The Boston Globe, as well as a variety of hip music blogs and indie radio stations. Even her own musical hero Iris DeMent is a fan, saying she is “the best poet I’ve heard in a long damn time.” She was out supporting dates this fall for Richard Thompson, Amos Lee and Greg Brown.
