What kinds of personal experiences have impacted your songwriting? Do other songwriters inspire you to take your own songwriting in a new direction?
Rebecca: We played on Woodsongs Old-Time Radio two or three years ago and it was a co-bill with an amazing singer-songwriter, Kelly Joe Phelps. Listening to and watching Kelly Joe for the very first time was really the moment in which I was inspired to start writing songs. I'd written a little bit in the past, but watching Kelly Joe Phelps—he's sitting there with his guitar, the saddest most genuinely heartbreaking person you've ever seen—and he looks at you, opens his mouth and pours out his soul. It's like he's not even singing; he's having a conversation.
Jessica: It's so mournful.
Rebecca: So that really spurred me onto the path of songwriting. It's nice to have the little bits of inspiration that fuel and continue your learning.
Jessica: Nothing happens in a vacuum.

KELLY JOE TO APPEAR ON MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS TRIBUTE ALBUM :
On a recent holiday, Steve Dawson—guitar maestro and founder of local label Black Hen Music—had the bright idea of putting together a tribute album to one of his favourite bands, the Mississippi Sheiks. Other than the blues classic “Sitting on Top of the World”, the Sheiks’ songs are largely unknown to today’s music fans, despite having been revered by Americana-influenced musicians since the ’30s. In those days, the trio was one of the hottest—and sauciest—acts around, and it influenced such legends as Memphis Minnie, Robert Johnson, and Big Bill Broonzy. “Much of their stuff remains obscure,” Dawson told the Straight. “They disbanded in 1935, but were one of the first bands to generate crossover interest from both black and white communities. What’s going to make this different from the regular tribute album is that, for the most part, there’s going to be a house band and the musicians are coming here to record over a three-day period.” The artists appearing on the album—which is scheduled to be out in March 2009—include Madeleine Peyroux, Bill Frisell, Bruce Cockburn, John Hammond, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bob Brozman, Kelly Joe Phelps, Geoff Muldaur, Van Dyke Parks, and Dawson’s recording buddies Jim Byrnes and the Sojourners. “Ry Cooder has also agreed to do it, much to the chagrin of his lawyer. We don’t know how it’s going to shake down, but he would be recording in L.A.,” Dawson said. - By Tony Montague, Vancouver's Free Press

11) Livin' In A Strain - Kelly Joe Phelps
Kelly Joe and I go back quite a ways. I've worked with him on a number of albums in one way or another. I know certain things about him in the studio, but the main one is that he likes to work fast. All of his takes are always interesting. Between takes of a song, suddenly the song will change keys, or time signatures, or who knows. Kelly Joe has about 3 takes in him before he's said what he has to say. There is no way you'll get him to do more than that, and frankly you shouldn't have to. Anyway, the key is to get set up fast, and go - so that's what we did. This was done in Seattle. 2 mics, which turned out to be good choices! He did 3 takes that were all quite different, but we went with the first one. I guess he forgot to turn off his cel phone though, because it rang at the end of the take, so I flew in a last bar from a different take!

Just awesome virtuosity
Small venue, old style night club layout, tables and chairs for the audience, KJP just sat on a chair on stage with an acoustic guitar.
We got there early so got good seats, the place seemed to be packed with guitarists from the comments, sitting at the table behind me was Gary Moore.
If I was in the way Gary, tough shit you should have got there earlier! :TheBird:
KJP was mesmerising, he just drew you into the music, he didn't even seem aware of the audience it was just him and his guitar, if you went with him you shared that special space

"I’m not going to try to explain these songs; I don’t necessarily understand them myself,” Kelly Joe Phelps said in one of his very few announcements to an audience of the conspicuously faithful. “But I know what it feels like to play them.” Frankly, this didn’t look too comfortable.
Sitting alone in front of the pulpit and underneath the stained-glass window high above the stage of the Union Chapel, Phelps writhed and twitched like a man being guided by the hand of an invisible and not especially adroit puppeteer. Head lolling, eyes rolling and occasionally levitating so that his backside was barely touching the seat, he played an acoustic guitar and sang in a sad, blues moan that seemed to pass through his body like the wind through a desert cave.
Highly skilled in slide, lap-steel and finger-picking acoustic guitar techniques, the 49-year-old performer from Portland, Oregon, has established himself as one of the singular musicians of his generation. His latest album, Western Bell, is a collection of instrumental numbers that combine elements of folk, country and blues music. He performed no instrumentals per se at this show, although most of the songs began and ended with long stretches of acoustic guitar played in a daring, semi-improvised, finger-picking style that turned his folk laments and country-blues rags into a succession of full-blown musical odysseys.
In songs such as The Anvil and Prodigal Son, Phelps conjured a sense of sorrow and yearning as he sang tales of damnation and redemption. Drinking was a recurring theme, and the promise of salvation. “You can rebuke me, scold me, scandalise my name ... My soul’s gonna sit up in the kingdom,” he sang in That’s Alright.
More a recital than a show, the performance had a stark, spiritual quality that was underlined by the setting of the venue. It looked exhausting, and while Phelps, driven by who knows what demons, maintained a remarkable level of intensity, the hushed tones and reverential mood in the hall began to feel a bit oppressive after a while.

Kelly Joe Phelps continues to expand the parameters of modern blues through his strong commitment to literary songs and his expressive yet simple guitar stylings. While casual listeners may call Phelps a bluesman, his playing is so fluid, dexterous, and improvised he obviously has the soul of a jazz musician. Phelps was raised in a music loving household in Sumner, WA, near Tacoma. The son of Seventh Day Adventist parents, Phelps' father was an air conditioning and refrigeration specialist and his mother worked as a housewife and Tupperware sales person. "They didn't have a large record collection," he recalled in a 2000 interview, "but the influence from them musically was the fact that they played music, at home, almost daily." Phelps' parents didn't play music for religious reasons, but merely for emotional ones. Phelps' father played guitar, fiddle, piano, and harmonica while his mother played guitar and some banjo. His father liked country & western music, but also developed an ear for blues, as he brought home albums by Meade "Lux" Lewis, Pete Johnson, and other boogie-woogie piano players. "I can remember being five or six and hearing him beat out these boogie-woogie tunes on piano," Phelps recalled.
