By this time is was clear to me that India and its culture, musical and philosophical, had become a part of my life, and it remains so to this day. In 1972 and primarily under the influence of the great South Indian vina player Balachander, I was studying vina under master Ramanathan at Wesleyan College Connecticut. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and I had become friends already in 1969, and having met violinist L. Shankar who was teaching also at Wesleyan, by 1973-4 Shakti was born.

By the end of 1975 mridangam player Ramnad Raghavan had been replaced by T.H. Vikku Vinayakram whose speciality was Ghatam, but not before CBS had recorded a live concert we played at NYU in Southampton Long Island. This was the first Shakti recording.

From 1976 until the end of 1978 Shakti toured the world. One of my fondest memories is the time Shakti spent playing concerts opposite Weather Report. This was a hot combination at this time.

By 1978 Vikku had to return to Madras to take over the school for percussion his father had founded some years before.

Everyone thought I flipped out. It was not well-received at all by the record company or my agent and manager. Artistically, I thought it was wonderful, but they all thought I was a little loopy."

"The record companies and promotional companies had no idea what to call Shakti, which category of music it fit into, or which bin in the record shop to put it in. So they looked at it with a great amount of hesitancy. But I guess they've been proven wrong because Shakti has endured."

I'm extremely proud of Shakti because prior to it, there was very little collaboration between North and South Indian musics," said McLaughlin. "Shakti played a role in the reunification of the North and South in the musical sense. Since Shakti, the collaborations between North and South have grown a thousand times. We now have very regular North-South meetings."

"Indian musicians became much more open after Shakti towards the idea of trying things not only within the realms of Indian music but by stepping out of Indian music and into any traditions they felt comfortable with. Shakti was one of the first combinations of musicians trying to do something that crossed all musical boundaries. We didn't approach each other thinking ‘Okay, you play South Indian, I play North Indian and he'll play jazz, then see what happens.’ We just jumped into the wagon and took a ride together. It was four people as one. We were very young at that time and had no qualms about trying different things. We just sat down and played and did whatever was necessary to make it work musically and be fun. It was something unique at that time. Previously, when people from different cultures made music, one or the other music was crossing over and never meeting somewhere in between. For instance, if Yehudi Menuhin played with Ravi Shankar, Menuhin had to cross over into the Indian territory to play Indian classical music written for him by Shankar. It was never a combination of classical music and Indian classical music together. There were reasons for that. They were great traditionalists who believed they had to maintain their traditions. "

A noter que jusque fin 1975-début 1976, John McLaughlin ne joue pas encore sur les Shakti Guitars réalsées pour lui par Abraham Wechter. John utilise en effet une guitare fabriquée spécialement pour lui par Mark Whitebook:

I thought, "Wait a minute - I'm really a guitar player," and I had to ask myself a question: Do I seriously want to just become a vina player, or what is it that I really want to do? Of course I knew the answer - play guitar. But the vina's articulation was much more satisfying.
so I got the idea that maybe I could change the fingerboard on the guitar. I could get the same possibilities or at least satisfy my own self in terms of nuance expression and subtleties in the bending of the notes. So I talked to Mark Whitebook out in California - he had built my first acoustic guitar - but unfortunately he was suffering from asthma, and the doctor had forbidden him to work with wood, which is tragic because he's a brilliant luthier.

By this time I am speaking to guitar builder Mark Whitebook about my ideas for a ‘Shakti’ Guitar with a scalloped fingerboard and sympathetic strings. Ali Akbar Kahn tells me I need at least 7, so I want 7. Unfortunately Mark Whitebook has asthma, and has to quit building guitars, a real shame. On the first Shakti album I am playing one of his guitars. I find Abraham Wechter who is working for Gibson Guitars at this time, and he is the one who finally builds me a Shakti Guitar.

[The] accompanying strings, or what people think of as "drone" or "sympathetic" strings, which they aren't truly - they're accompanying strings. It's more like an Autoharp than a sitar. I wanted to be able to play chords without having to stop my single-line soloing.

Un magnifique album, plein de sérénté et de beauté. Le raga Chandrakauns interprété par Chauraisia et Zakir Hussain en ouverture est magnifque.
La version studio de "The Wish" (celle studio était paru sur l'album de John "The Promise") est splendide, avec Zakir et Vikku en parfaite symbiose. Quant à Mukti (60mn!), c'est un tour de force, le sumum du Shakti post L.Shankar.

Seulement un titre ("Niyati"). Il y a ussi un DVD, mais dont le contenu est reparu ensuite sur le DVD "The Way Of Beauty" paru en 2004.

En revanche, en officiel, il existe les 2 (monstrueux) concerts de Shakti à Montreux en 1976 et 1977, parus sur le coffret "The John McLaughlin Montreux Concerts"

La version de "Joy" de l'édition 1976 est également dispo en vidéo sur le DVD "The Way Of Beauty" sus-cité.

Au niveau des bootlegs, le live à la BBC (12 mai 1977) est indispensable aussi.

Niyati vient du live "Saturday Night In Bombay" (mais n'était pas paru sur l'album).

The Way Of Beauty a le mérte de proposer la version vidéo (énorme) de Joy à Montreux en 1976, ans que le concert de Bombay, avec le fabuleux joueur de santoor Shivkuma Sharma et le fantastique guitariste Debashish Battacharya:



Les concerts du DVD avec Srinivas (un musicien que j'aodre pourtant) sont par contre plus inégaux: je ne suis pas très fan du chanteur (Mahadevan) et encore moins du son de McLaughlin (trop d'effets, et avec du synthé).

De cete pédriode, je retiens en officiel le live "The Believer", excellent, et le morceau avec Sharma sur "Saturday Night In Bombay".

Non, c'est bien 17 cds, my mistake! Mais de puis, JML a jué à Montruex, avec Shakti et en duo avec Billy Cobham notamment (les enregsitrements circulent). ;)o

En 2006 sort le DVD A Way Of Beauty, un documentaire de 60 mn:



Ce DVD comprend ceci:

- 45 minutes of sound check footage of Remember Shakti before a Concert at the New Morning in Paris 2004;
- 55 minutes of a historic concert called Saturday Night in Bombay (Mumbai, India) in 2000;
- Two Live Concerts of the band shot with the original band (with L. Shankar & "Vikku" T. H Vinayakram from Montreux Jazz Festival 1976 as well as Montreux Jazz 2004.

à noter que le dvd sur shakti, mais également laissé de glace, il faudrait que je le revisionne, mais j'avais été déçu par les performances proposés (sauf quelques images d'archives des 70's plus intéressantes à mon sens).

Oui, ce DVD est surtout intéressant en effet pour les archives filmées du groupe dans les 70's (Montreux 76), mais pas extraordinaire pour les concerts des années 2000.

Revu le DVD ce week-end: le grand moment du DVD est la version de Joy à Montreux en 1976 (avec L.SHankar au violon), et j'aime beaucoup le concert "'Saturday Night in Bombay" (qui est apru aussi en CD), en particulier le morceau SHringar, un superbe compo du grand maître du santoor Shivkumar Sharma.

Pour le reste du DVD en revanche, c'est pas du même calibre: le soundcheck de 2004 n'a pas grand intérêt, quant au morceau "Sakhi" de Montreux 2004, je le trouve vraiment pas terrible: McLaughlin joue de la guitare synthé ( ), et c'est assez affreux (on dirait du new age), et je ne suis pas très fan du chanteur (Shankar Mahadevan.).

En résumé, il y a 5 formations principales de Shakti (sans compter les invités ponctuels):

- SHakti Mk1 (1974-1975) avec JML, L.Shankar, Zakir Hussain et Raghavan
- Shakti Mk2 (1975-1978) avec JML, L.Shankar, Zakir Hussain et T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram
- Shakti Mk3 (1997), avec JML, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Zakir Hussain et T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram
- Shakti MK4 (1999-2000) avec JML, U.Shrinivas, Zakir Hussain et Selvaganesh
- Shakti MK5 (2001-Aujourd'hui) avec JM, U.Shrinivas, Zakir Hussain, Selvaganesh et Shankar Mahadevan
